Frequently asked questions
Your questions, calmly answered.
About preventive guidance, working with your vet, and how a plan runs from intake to follow-up. Honest answers, without jargon.

Prevention & food
What preventive guidance is, who it suits, and how I look at food.
How do I know whether my dog’s or cat’s current food is suitable?
Pay attention to energy, stool, coat quality, behaviour and satiety. If you notice itching, changing stools, lots of grass eating, hyperactivity or, on the contrary, sluggishness, food may play a role. When in doubt, you are always welcome to send me a message and I’ll gladly think along with you.
What does preventive nutrition guidance include?
Preventive nutrition guidance focuses on preventing problems and supporting the natural balance of your dog or cat. I look at your animal’s current food, lifestyle, routine and needs, so we can adjust in time, before complaints arise.
You can come to me with questions such as:
- “Is my animal getting everything it needs?”
- “Does this food suit the age and activity of my dog or cat?”
- “How can I support resistance or vitality preventively, through food?”
- “Which food fits my animal and my family situation best?”
- “How do I give my puppy or kitten a good foundation?”
I don’t make diagnoses and I don’t treat complaints. Changes in health, behaviour or stool always call for a visit to the vet first. Once there is medical clarity, I can help optimise the food preventively.
Which dogs and cats is preventive guidance suitable for?
Preventive nutrition guidance is suitable for all dogs and cats, regardless of age, breed or current food. It is especially valuable for animals where you would like to prevent problems from arising or getting worse.
Think of:
- Puppies and kittens who need a good start
- Young adult animals whose foundation you want to keep optimal
- Seniors who benefit from support for vitality and joints
- Picky eaters, or animals with a changing appetite
- Active dogs who could use extra support through food
- Indoor cats with little variety in movement and stimulation
Preventive guidance helps you adjust in time, tune the food more closely to your animal’s needs and support its overall balance.
Important: with health complaints, or a suspicion of them, a vet visit always comes first. Once there is medical clarity, I can help optimise the food preventively.
Do you work with a specific type of food?
I stand for being food-neutral: I choose what suits your animal best. That might be kibble, fresh, canned or a combination, for example. The wellbeing and needs of your dog or cat as an individual are always central, and always the starting point.
On top of that, my advice will always be independent. I am not connected to any specific manufacturer in any way.
Health & your vet
Where my work ends and your vet’s begins, and how the two connect.
Can you help with health complaints?
As a starting nutrition specialist, I work exclusively preventively. That means I don’t treat complaints and I don’t make diagnoses about them. I can, however, look at your dog’s or cat’s food with you, to see how you can support the body in a natural and suitable way. Should I obtain my integrative feed therapist certificate at a later date, I will update this information. You are always welcome to send me a message with questions about this.
Important: with health complaints, changes in behaviour, pain, itching, vomiting, diarrhoea or other medical signals, a visit to the vet always comes first. Once your animal has been examined and there is clarity, you can additionally work with a feed therapist to tune the food as closely as possible to your dog’s or cat’s needs. For this I can refer you to future fellow integrative therapists: get in touch, and I’ll pass on the names of a few good, reliable therapists.
Do you work together with vets?
Yes. When needed, I coordinate with your vet. Even within a preventive approach, being in contact with the vet can be very valuable. Vets are the designated professionals for medical examination, diagnosis and treatment, both when underlying problems are suspected and when you want to have things checked preventively. Think, for example, of a blood test to see the vitamin and mineral status, or a stool test to find out whether deworming is needed or not.
Once there is clarity about your dog’s or cat’s health situation, I can help optimise food and lifestyle preventively. That way my advice connects well with the vet’s medical care, and together we work toward the best possible wellbeing for your animal.
What if it turns out during a plan that something medical is going on?
When I see signals that could point to a medical problem, I always refer you to the vet. Good cooperation between nutrition and medical care matters, and safety comes first.
After the vet visit, once medical problems have been ruled out, I can step back in to see how we can further tune food and lifestyle. That way everything stays clear, responsible and in your animal’s best interest.
Working together
How a plan runs, quick questions, online and live intakes, and pricing.
How does an advice or plan work?
In short:
- Intake: you fill in a questionnaire
- Analysis: I look at food, health and lifestyle
- Advice: you receive a personal plan
- Guidance: we follow progress and adjust where needed
For more information, have a look at the Services page, which you will also find in the menu.
Can I also ask separate questions, without a full plan?
Yes, you can. As a new client you can, for example, first contact me by email or Instagram and ask your question there. Depending on the question and what is needed to answer it, we can then schedule a single consult, for example. See the Single consult page for more information.
As an existing client, I am also always reachable by email or WhatsApp for questions in between.
Do you work on location?
In principle I work online, so I can guide everyone, wherever you live. Through video calls, email and clear reports, you get the same personal attention as if we met in person. Working online has many advantages:
- your animal stays in its familiar surroundings, and you have no travel time
- you can calmly reread everything you receive digitally
- it is flexible, with quick, short lines of contact
- it keeps the guidance accessible, clear and pleasant for both you and your animal
Within the South Limburg region (NL), I am also happy to come to your home for a live intake. I would love to meet you and your animal this way if you are interested, entirely without obligation, of course. And because I live so close to the Belgian border, I also offer a live intake in part of Belgium when you are within 35 km of Heerlen, with no call-out or mileage costs: I cover those myself.
What does a plan cost, and what is included?
I work with clear package and service prices, so you know exactly where you stand. No surprises, no loose ends. You will find the current price on each service page, together with everything that is included. For services that are not bookable yet, the price follows soon.
Still have a question?
Curious what I can mean for you and your animal?
Plan a free, no-obligation introductory call, so we can calmly look together at what suits you. I hope to speak to you soon!
Love, Melissa
